Lone Star Park's thoroughbred grandstand went dark on July 12. Quarter horse racing doesn't return until September. For anyone who tracks the local calendar by post times at 6:35 p.m., August looks like a hole. It isn't. The city's other engines are running harder than usual to fill it, and if you already live here, this is the month where you catch things before the crowds from Arlington and Irving figure them out.
Most Grand Prairie weekend guides you'll find online lean on the same three anchors: Epic Waters, Ripley's, and Traders Village. Fine for tourists. For a resident, the interesting story in August 2026 is turnover. Three brand-name restaurants have either just opened or are staking out corners along SH 161. EpicCentral is layering a new market on top of its water show. The Main Street Farmers Market is heading into its Hatch chile weekend. None of those things existed in this configuration last August. Treating the month as filler misses the point.
The Grand Prairie Farmers Market at 120 W. Main Street runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, through December 12 this season. It's open now, and August is when the schedule shifts from a produce stop to an event. The market's annual Hatch chile weekend lands in August, which is the one Saturday of the year where showing up at 8 sharp actually matters if you want the New Mexico peppers before they're gone.

If you're going to build one recurring habit out of this list, this is the one. It's a five-minute drive for most of the neighborhood and it resets weekly.
EpicCentral has hosted its Illuvia water show and Bolder Adventure Park for a while, but the Waterfront Market is the newer wrinkle worth putting on the calendar. The next date is August 7, 2026, with more than 70 vendors selling vintage, streetwear, jewelry, handmade goods, and food alongside live music, timed so the crowd is still there when the water show fires.
EpicCentral welcomed roughly 150,000 visitors last March and pulls in more than 2.8 million visits a year across its 172 acres.
Read that against the Waterfront Market's Thursday-evening slot and you get why it works. The foot traffic is already there for the show. The market gives it somewhere to go for the hour before. If you've been avoiding EpicCentral because it feels engineered for tourists, this is the format that makes it feel like a neighborhood night out.
The one to combine it with, if you haven't been yet: The Landing, chef Tiffany Derry's gastropub and sports lounge inside EpicCentral at 2951 S. State Highway 161. It opened April 9, 2026 under her T2D Concepts group, which also runs Roots Southern Kitchen. A two-time James Beard finalist opening her fourth concept in Grand Prairie rather than Uptown is not something the market gets every week, and it hasn't been open long enough for the reservation book to have hardened.

Four brand-name concepts, one corridor, one calendar year. The Black Bear detail is the one worth flagging: the chain filed for a Grand Prairie location back in 2023 at 2204 I-20 Frontage Road that never moved forward, and this second attempt is a ground-up 4,800-square-foot corporate build rather than a franchise conversion. That's a different level of commitment than the first pass, and it tells you how the operators are reading the SH 161 traffic count.
For a resident, the practical read is this: if you've been going to the same four dinner spots for two years, the ratio of new options to old ones is about to shift. Front-run the reviews.
Grand Prairie ISD starts back up in mid-August, and Epic Waters at 2970 Epic Place has clearly built its calendar around that. Three things worth knowing:
The Back to School Bash runs August 7 through 9 inside the indoor waterpark. Pair it with the same-day Waterfront Market at EpicCentral next door and you have a full Friday-to-Sunday radius without leaving the district.
Epic Waters is also running a school supply drive for local students that concludes August 9. If you've been meaning to hand off the extra binders and pencil boxes hiding in the pantry from last year, drop them at the front gate on the way in.
And the Summer Luau on August 1 through 2 and Mermaid School August 3 through 6 are the tail end of the summer programming. After August 9, the daily circus-style entertainment that ran all summer through the Epic Circus Spectacular is done for the year.
If you have a subject you'd otherwise be dragging kids to on a Saturday morning, this is the week to bank the goodwill.
Worth stating plainly, because this is the piece that catches people who moved here in the last twelve months.
Lone Star Park's 2026 thoroughbred meet ran April 16 through July 12, covering 41 live racing days with 21 stakes worth a combined $2.65 million. It's done. The signature race, the Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile, ran on Lone Star Million Day back on Memorial Day. Post times don't return to the track's calendar until the quarter horse meet opens in September, and quarter horse racing runs Thursdays through Saturdays into November.
So if a friend from out of town texts asking to catch a Friday night at the track this month, you're taking them to simulcasting only. The grandstand at 1000 Lone Star Parkway isn't running live cards again for another six weeks.
The city's outdoor concert series and the summer movies at Lynn Creek Park have also mostly cycled through by the second half of August. This is why the Waterfront Market and the food openings are doing the heavy lifting this month. It's the only calendar in town still adding dates.
